Seven churches from the Clay and Putnam counties withdrew from the Santa Fe River Association in 1877 to form the St. John’s River Baptist Association. Two years later (1879), as the number of cooperating churches had doubled to 14, the association changed its name to the St. John’s River Baptist Association.
