JAMES McDONALD

James McDonald (1798-1869) was born in Limerick County, Province of Muster, Ireland. He probably led the most unusual and colorful life of any Baptist preacher who ever ministered in Florida. When McDonald was seven years of age he witnessed the hanging of his father and fourteen relatives for their participation in the Irish rebellion. He was then raised and trained to be a Catholic priest. After exacting revenge upon a fellow countryman for his false testimony against his relatives, James fled to America. He decided to enlist as a soldier in the Spanish Army in the Cuban conflict of 1829. He was unjustly arrested as a spy for England and placed in Moro Castle to await a firing squad. In desperation he knelt and asked God to save him while awaiting his execution. A friend from Norfolk visiting in Cuba brought about the near miraculous release of McDonald. He determined to become a Baptist after reading and studying the Bible for three months. He became one of Georgia’s best known and most beloved ministers. He became a missionary to east Florida in 1843, and served as only one of five Baptist preachers in an area 300 miles by 200 miles. He served as the first pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Jacksonville (now First Baptist Church). McDonald had the Florida Association voted into the Georgia Baptist Convention in 1846. McDonald was pastor of Sharon Church in Nassau County for ten years (now First Baptist Church Callahan). In 1848 McDonald was pastor of Bethel and Sharon. He served as Moderator of Alachua Baptist Association in 1848-1849. McDonald married Teresa Amanda Pendarvis of Duval County on May 15, 1842. They had eleven children, eight of whom survived. McDonald died in Rome, Georgia in 1869.

Mercer,-Joshua

Joshua Mercer (June 10, 1788-February 4, 1869) was born in Wilkes County, Georgia. As a young man Joshua was baptized by his brother Jesse into the Bethesda (GA.) Baptist Church.  However, it was years later, at age 42, Joshua responded to the call of God to the preaching ministry.  Although he supported his family by farming, for five years he served as a pastor and church starter in southwest and central Georgia, as well as a domestic missionary for the Georgia Baptist Convention.  His itinerant preaching circuit took him into Jackson County, Florida, where he assumed regular preaching the Bethlehem Church (later called Campbellton) and the Sardis Church (now known as Shady Grove).  In March, 1843, Mercer moved his family from Baker County, Georga, to Marianna, Jackson County, Florida.  On March 16, 1845, he helped organize the Union Academy Church (later called Greenwood), where he served as pastor from 1845 to 1848, and 1851 to 1854. After having he led in the organization of the West Florida Baptist Association in 1847, Mercer served as the association’s moderator from 1850-1859.  He was the brother of Jesse Mercer and Hermon Mercer.  A wonderful tribute was paid to him in the 1860 West Florida Baptist Association Minutes.
