JAMES PAGE

James Page (b. 1808; d. 1883) was an African-descendant slave in Middle Florida during the mid-nineteenth century who became a Missionary Baptist preacher who developed into one of Florida’s most influential religious leaders of his day.  However, this recognition was achieved only after nearly three decades of effectively serving as a bond servant and minister helping other slaves cope with their forced servitude.  Although the event is not recorded, James Page made a profession of faith in Christ and sought to follow his earthly master by becoming a member of Leon County’s First Baptist Church, which permitted membership, but not a say in the church’s administration.  The church body did encourage him to respond to God’s call to the preaching ministry.

James Page led the slave community to organize in 1850 the first known uniquely Baptist African-descendant congregation in Florida.  It was called the Bethlehem Baptist Church at Bel Air Plantation.  Having been greatly influenced by the spirit of God moving in his life, he was ordained to the gospel ministry in August, 1851, and soon started an ongoing preaching ministry at Bel Air.  That ministry in Tallahassee ultimately resulted in the establishment in 1870 of another uniquely African- descendant congregation called the Bethel Baptist Church, where Rev. Page subsequently served 27 years as pastor.

GEORGE C. POWELL

Powell,George-C.

George C. Powell (December 13, 1809-November 1881) became involved in one of the most tragic circumstances in American history. Powell was born in Burke County, Georgia, near Botsford meeting house. He was baptized by John Blackston into the membership of Mount Panan Church, Crawford County, on December 28, 1828. He was married in 1830, and was ordained to preach at Liberty Church in Russell County, Alabama in 1847. In 1848 he was called as pastor to Beulah Church in Steward County, Georgia, and moved near Bellville, Florida, in 1859. He preached at Providence Church in Bradford County for about a year and moved to Lake Jessup in Orange County. He lived also at Oviedo and Orlando. He was pastor of several churches in Central Florida. Records show that Powell reorganized Bethel Baptist Church in Orlando in 1871, and it became present day First Baptist Church, Orlando, Florida. He served as pastor of First Baptist Church, Geneva, Florida, 1875. The tragedy relates to his sons. Powell had one son killed in the Civil War, another crippled, and a third hung. Lewis Thornton (Paine) Powell, the son hung, is shrouded in much mystery down to this day. He was the man who tried to kill Secretary of State William Seward the same evening John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln. Therefore, he was hung with the other conspirators. Much controversy surrounds the life and death of Lewis (Paine) Powell. The wife of George was Caroline Powell (1811-1885) who was born in Jones County, Georgia in 1811 and died at Lake Harvey, in Orange County, Florida on December 2, 1885.

PRIMITIVE BAPTISTS

The Primitive Baptist group is one of the most independent Baptist groups of all. They do not claim denominational status, and see the local church as the only governing body for Baptists. This group has no denominational structure, no mission sending societies, and no Sunday School organization. They are in favor of evangelistic effort but feel the New Testament views it as personal responsibility, and not an organizational task. The associations have annual minutes, articles of faith, rules of order, and fellowship with like minded believers. They are strongly Calvinistic, and hold to the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord s Supper. Ministers are not required to have any theological training, and many of them serve completely at their own expense. Each congregation is careful about receiving new members, and there is no national organization to report statistical reports. It is estimated they have 1,000 churches, and 72,000 members. Membership is
primarily in the south.

Political involvement, social justice, civil rights, and presidential leadership are vital issues with this organization.
