ALBERTO DIAZ
Alberta Diaz was the key figure in seeing Baptist work begin in Cuba. He was a soldier in the 1880s time of rebellion. He escaped from the hand of the Spaniards and moved to New York. He worked in a tobacco factory by day and studied medicine at night. While ill he discovered a Bible and translated it from English to Spanish. Upon doing this he trusted Christ as his Saviour and soon returned to Cuba to tell of his new found faith. Another Cuban crisis drove him and he family back to New York where they attended the Willoughby Avenue Baptist Church. Diaz was baptized there on November 26, 1882. The American Bible Society hired Diaz and sent him back to Cuba with boxes of Bibles in the spring of 1883. With many trials and persecutions, Diaz continued to preach and he and a small group of men rented a hall at Prado 115 in Havana. The Florida Baptist State Board of Missions sent W. F. Wood to investigate this new work in Cuba. Wood preached at Prado 115 and four stepped forward for baptism. By January 26, 1886, the first Baptist Church was constituted in Havana. Diaz went with Wood back to Key West where he was ordained January 27, 1886, and returned to Cuba. After the war he became Presbyterian. He died in 1916.
